Psychotherapy as a process whereby psychological problems are treated through communication and relationship factors between an individual and a psychotherapist. Psychotherapy is neither static nor one-directional. It is a dynamic, two-way relationship in which both the psychotherapist and the client work together to alleviate the client’s mental distress. Every experience is uniquely tailored to the needs and goals of the individual client.

Most of the time, psychotherapy alone may be the best treatment for a client, depending on the issues at hand, their severity and their frequency. Other times, psychotherapy can be combined with appropriate medication. Psychotherapists will take into consideration the needs and wishes of clients and their families to create individualized treatment plans.

The number of sessions depends on the nature of the problems being addressed. Psychological issues which cause significant distress and/or impairment usually have been created and maintained for months, if not years. Therefore, adequate time is needed for the client to start the process of change.

Sometimes, brief psychotherapy programs (lasting from 6-8 weeks) may be sufficient, otherwise longer-term psychotherapy will be recommended.

Experience suggests that meeting weekly or once every two weeks is effective for psychotherapy to have a real impact- a short enough interval for the sessions to link up effectively; long enough for the client to reflect on what has been discussed.

Because we adhere to the ethical standards of the American Psychological Association (APA) and the Singapore Psychological Society (SPS), all sessions are strictly confidential unless there is concrete evidence of potential harm towards self or others.

At your first session, your psychologist will go through the limits and exceptions to confidentiality with you in detail and you are welcome to ask any questions that you may have.

Sessions are by appointment only.
